Can you believe this the U.S Education Department under the leadership of Secretary Betsy DeVos, handed over 10.7 million in federal loans and grants to students at the Illinois Institute of Art and the Art Institute of Colorado even though the for profit schools were not accredited and therefore ineligible to get the funds. According to an article published in The Washington Post today Education Department officals tried to shield Dream Center Education owner of the Art Instituteand Argosy University after they lied to students about the accreditation status of the now closed schools. According to law for profit colleges must be fully accredited to utilize federal student aid programs. These schools were not, but they advertised that the schools were accredited, students kept coming and the Education Department kept giving them money. Senior Education Department offical Michael Flora sent letters to the presidents of the Art Institutes in May of 2018 letting them know the schools did not qualify for federal aid since they lost their accreditation in January of that year. To get around that roadblock Flora said ,the department would retroactively and temporarly declare the Art Institutes as nonprofits effective Janaury 20th 2018 the date they lost their accreditation. Cash money says there won’t be a tweet or a peep from the Oval Office about this.
