Alex Trebek the host of TV’s popular Jeopardy game show shocked viewers with his recent announcement of having stage four pancreatic cancer, this is one question no one could have gussed. Having just lost my mother to liver cancer my heart goes out to him and his family. Trebek has hosted the show for 35 years and recently joked about who he would like to see replace him. In his offical announcement vowed to “beat the low survival rate statistics for this disease”. According to published stats pancreatic cancer has the highest mortality rate of the major cancers with 91 percent of patients dying within five years of being diagnosed. Doctors warn that presistant pain and unexplained weight loss could be a sign of pancraetic cancer. I applaud Trebek for using his platform to raise awareness about this disease and hopefully inspire others to see a doctor. It’s a mistake to self diagnose and were told that by the time you start exhibiting symptoms things are pretty far along. So it’s very important that we see a doctor when we know things are not right with us. Think of your loved ones and what they would do if you weren’t around. The 78 year old Trebek’s contract runs through 2022.
