Well the dust has settled and after a strong challenge from Mike Espy, Cindy Hyde-Smith is still a U.S. Senator, The republican powers that deployed resources to Mississippi to help Hyde-Smith. Money and boots on the ground, President Trump even made second trip to Mississippi to campaign for her, with stops in Tupelo and on the Gulf Coast. Ironically Cindy Hyde-Smith was not the Presidents choice to fill the senate seat and he actually called Mississippi Govenor Phil Bryant and told him so. But Bryant stuck with his choice, and now she is obviously viewed as a asset in the U.S. Senate. Indeed politics make strange bedfellows. With 99.1 % of precincts reporting Sen Cindy Hyde-Smith has 53.9% of the vote with 474.190, while Espy has 46.1% for a vote total of 406.209. He told journalist Roland Martin he needed 500.000 votes to win. So what now? Espy’s candidacy certainly moved the dial on black voter turn out, in fact it was downright historical for Mississippi, and for a midterm runoff the numbers are unheard of!. But where do we go from here? according to records there are at least 800.000 registered African American voters in Mississippi, which means someone stayed home. and drank the tranquilizing drug of “my vote don’t count”. Even in defeat I think Espy had sound advice for supporters, urging them not to dwell on this defeat but to let this be the start of a movement that energizes voters. I think we have to work on activating voters who have stayed home, and develope new tactics and alliances for the battles yet to come.
