I’LL TAKE CARE OF THE TAB WOAD 09/24/19
RANDOM THOUGHTS:
In May of this year Robert F. Smith, founder, chairman and CEO of Vista Equity Partners, promised to pay off the balance of the outstanding student loans of the Morehouse graduating class. It was a shock for students and faculty alike. This past Friday the College announced the final tally for Smith’s generous donation 34 million dollars!. This will impact more than 400 students, paraents and gaurdians of the class of 2019. The money will be paid directly to loan servicers by way of the college’s new Morehouse Student Success Program and cover federally subsidized loans federal unsubsidized loans, Georgia Student Access loads,Perkins Loans, Parent Plus Loans, and certain private loans processed through Morehouse. Smith’s gift also included $400.000 to research ways to invest and curb student loan debt. I like the fact that this event has sparked a coversation about student debt. There needs to be counseling for students, who often borrow more money than they need just to get a refund for things they want or a parent may encourage a student to get extra money. According to the Root.com UNCF research says HBCU graduates borrow nearly twice as much as non-HBCU students, an adverage of $26,266 more. Morehouse President David A. Thomas says Morehouse has been contacted by other philanthropists both large and small who have been inspired by Smith’s gift snd want to see how they can contribute to this program. I agree with UNCF President Michael I. Lomax who said “Morehouse’s program to provide debt relief to new graduates is a fund raising oppertunity that should be studied and duplicated nationally.
