RANDOM THOUGHT’S:

Another violent weekend and another call for civility among the citizens of Jackson. It’s become a familiar scenario with each rash of shootings. So far 28 people have been shot this month in Jackson, ten people just this past weekend two of whom died. Obviously you can’t put a police officer on every corner, but a study was done years ago during one of Harvey Johnson’s administration’s indicated that Jackson didn’t have enough officers on the streets of our city. And I understand the fact that revenue is needed to raise the salary levels in the department, often Jackson serves as a training ground for other departments who hire certified officers from the Jackson Police Department. Cities like Houston often come to Jackson to host job fairs. If we budget for 500 officers but have only 300 on the streets why not why not use the money allotted for the other 200 to beef up the salaries of the the ones you have so you can retain their services and possibly hire another 100 by offering a competitive wage that will attract quality officers. A lack of education and economic opportunity will always be a breeding ground for conflict, which is why city leaders have to be proactive and inovative with solutions that speak to the heart of our problems.
