MISSISSIPPI DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION FRIDAY FAVOR WOAD 04/26/19
RANDOM THOUGHT’S:
This week there was a moment when I went back to Dundee Attendance Center, where I watched my math teacher put an equation on the blackboard that I knew was wrong. He quickly saw his mistake and corrected it. Unfortunately the problem with teacher pay raise funding wont be an easy fix for the Mississippi Department of Education. MDE used data from the Mississippi Student Information database which listed some special education, gifited and CTE positions as ineligible for state funds. They weren’t but now the districts are resopnsible for the budget shortfalls until a solution can be found. This situation could have a major inpact on some of the states poor districts who are already struggling to make ends meet. And the larger the district the larger the shortfall the Madison county is looking at having to pull over $600.000 from its resurve fund. Governor Phil Bryant has gone on record saying there will be no special session to deal with this. He released this statement ” The tax payers of Mississippi should not have to fund a special session because of a mistake made by the Mississippi Department of Education (MDE). MDE should identify any other funds that can be used to pay for the raises not accounted for in the original funding, and the Legislature can refund that sorce through a deficit appropriation in January.” Some Democrats have suggested that Governor Bryant use his authority to move the needed money from the states rainy fund to MDE. I would not want to be working at MDE right now.
