North Park Mall is in the crosshairs of local activists and a Jackson City Councilman. Edelia Carthan a Tougaloo College adviser and five students wearing “Black Votes Matter” shirts were reminded that the Mall is private property. Mall security told them to leave twice after they were seen passing out fliers encouraging people to vote in Tuesday’s runoff elections. They were stopped as they left the property by a Ridgeland police officer who futher explained the Mall’s rules. As a result Jackson City Councilman Arron Banks is calling for a boycott of The mall. I see this as a teachable moment for us, we know the climate were living in and have to prepare ourselves to function by rules we don’t care for and did’t set up. A simple way of looking at this is to remember that when you go to someone’s house you have abide by their rules or they may ask you to leave. Personally I applaud the adviser and the students for what they were trying to do, thats the kind of activism that fuels a movement that can change things. But be aware that those in charge will use the letter of the law to stop you whenever possible. So prepare for the next battle by arming yourselves with knowledge of the battle ground.
