RANDOM THOUGHT’S

I think the city of Boston has hit upon a novel idea, their giving every kindergartner in Boston Public Schools a savings account with $50 in it to help pay for college or career training. City leaders made the announcement Monday. It’s part of a three year pilot program, this initative is called Boston Saves. According to Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh ” Boston Saves has proven to be an essential part of providing families with the tools to save for their childrens post- secondary future”. This strengthens Bostons investment in in the citys youth, and aims to provide more access to college and careers for Boston Families and to create a culture where students begin getting ready earlier for life beyond high school. According to a 2013 study in conducted in St Louis by Washington University, children from low to moderate income families with at least $499 in their account before reaching college age were more than 4 time likely to enroll in college than one with no savings account. I think this could become a model for other cities, it represents forward thinking on the part of the Mayor and his administration. And could help shape the futures of many of these children. I remember very vividly the struggles I face when I decided to go to college, even back in those ancient times I need almost $400.00 for books alone. After I arrived  I learned that growing up in one of the poorest countes in the state I did not get a college preparatory education, so I had to play catch up in some areas. So hats off to Boston.
