SHAFT HE’S A BAD…… The year was 1971 and the so called “Blackexplotation” movie genre was in full swing. One of the titles that produced a franchise was “SHAFT” starring Richard Roundtree as a cool streetwise private dective that all the ladies loved, men respected and criminals feared. Roundtree starred in the first three films, Sanuel L. Jackson reprised the role in the 2000 Shaft remake, bringing  his flavor to the role and enhancing the charactor created by Roundtree who had a cameo apperance in the movie. Now lets fast foward to 2019 Jackson is back as the title charactor, an older guy who struggling to understand the “Me Too Movement” Millennials” and his estranged son JJ. Jackson actually sat down with director Tim Story and went through script page by page. Jesse T. Usher plays J.J. Shafts estranged son, who seeks him out to help figure out why a close friend was murdered. Story was surprised that Jackson had so many ideas to help make Shaft likable, but not lose his idenity, in the end it’s Usher’s charactor J.J. that offers the pushback when Shaft threatens to beat up a woman or makes a homophobic joke, telling him in this day and time there are things you just can’t do anymore. This offering of Shaft also features performances from Alexandria Shipp as well as Richard Roundtree. This was a good way to wrap up Fathers Day.
