STATUES TERRIFIC THURSDAY 03/07/19
After several weeks of protest and counter protests, the Ole Miss Associated Student Body Senate voted overwhelmingly to relocate a confederate statue at the campus circle to an on campus cemetery. A state law refured to by the ASB states that: “The governing body may move the memorial to a a more suitable location if it is determined that the location is more appropriate to displaying the monument.” Now heres the rub is the Ole Miss ASB to be considered a quote unquote “A governing body of the university”? What are the next steps to removing the monument?. The ASB President said the resolution will go to the Dean of Students then the Vice Chancellor of student affairs and finally to the Chancellor all of whom must sign off on it acknowledging that they have seen it. As with most universities Ole Miss operates under a model of shared governance the ASB representing students but faculty and staff also have a voice on issues impacting the campus. The institutional executive officer will ultimately decide whether to submit the request to the Institutions of Higher Learning Board of Trustees for approval. After which according to Mississippi Code Section 39-7-22 the Mississippi Department of Archives and History must be consulted prior to public construction or improvement affecting Mississippi landmarks. In essence the removal is not a done deal.
