It’s the kind of thing you see in the movies, the 2019 graduating class of historically Morehouse College will have their student loans paid off by billionair investor and philantropist Robert F. Smith. He made the announcement during his commencement speech at the Atlanta school that counts amoung it’s alumni Dr. Martin Luther king Jr. This was a total surprise for students faculty and staff, Morehouse President Dr. David A. Thomas didn’t even have a clue this was coming. Smith recieved an honorary doctoral degree during Sunday mornings graduation exercise and had already announced a 1.5 million dollar gift to the school. Smith is the Chairman and CEO of Vista Equity Partners, a Software and technology investment firm. Smith told the grads that being on the bus toward success isn’t enough, they should wan’t to own it and drive it and pick up as many people as they can along the way. In reference to the student loan payoff he said “I’m putting some fuel into your bus, ” and “I’m counting on you to load up that bus”. President Thomas said this morning that some of the college staff had worked through the night to come up with a price tag for this gift. Early estiments suggest that the figure could be nearly 40 million for the nearly 400 graduates. I think this is an awesome gesture, I just pray that everyone of these young men fills up their bus.
