TEACHERS RESIDENCY TERRIFIC THURSDAY 05/02/19
Every year my local school district hosts several job fairs, thats because the state as a whole needs more teachers. According to records the state issued 2,002 fewer teacher licences in 2018 than it did in 2011. So it’s encourageing to hear the Mississippi Department of Education is launching a Residency program. Were told that many first year teachers leave the profession because of a lack of support and or mentor-ship, this program is designed to address that. Over 400 people applied to be part of the program, 35 were accepted the majority are from Mississippi. They will work and train in four districts around the state including Jackson, Sunflower County, Gulfport and Ocean Springs. These teachers will also commit to staying the district for three years after their residency. Phelton Cortez Moss MDE Director of Education Talent Acquisition and effectiveness said with the decline in the number of people going through traditional prep programs, the Mississippi teacher prep program comes in as a new alternative to fill some of the gaps. Moss noted that the residency program pays for the teachers education, allowing them focus on actually being able to work with and being in a school setting everyday, as opposed to having one semester of clinical experience, a common practice in many cases. I applaud the MDE on kicking off this program hopefully they can expand it next year.
