TERRIFIC THURSDAY WOAD 10/31/19 DIPLOMATIC IMMUNITY
RANDOM THOUGHT’S:
Diplomatic Immunity has always been something of a get out of jail free card for diplomats and their familys station in foreign countries. Most recently an accident in Great Britian highlighted this courtesy tthat many countries extend to visiting diplomats. Anne Sacoolas the wife of an American diplomat was traveling on the wrong side of the roadway on Aug. 27th in the village of Croughton, England and hit a motorcycle operated by teenager Harry Dunn head-on, the young man died at a nearby hospital. The collision occured less than a mile from a housing base operated by the U.S. Airforce where her husband works. Mrs Sacoolas claimed diplomatic immunity and left the country,Much to the ire of the young mans parents and many in the UK. In a letter to Dunn’s parents British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said that since Sacoolas has left the country she is no longer covered by diplomatic immunity. I don’t thinks this is true because in past times host countries have actually expelled diplomats for wrong doing, essentially sending them home because of the crime comitted on their soil but they were not prosecuted. The British Prime Minister has also called on the U.S. government to intervene and Tim Dunn and Charlott Charles came to the U.S. earlier this month. They met with President Trump on October 16th, during the meeting The president offered to bring in Sacoolas but they declined insisting on meeting with her on British soil along with investigators. At this point the parents are feed up and are planning to sue the Trump administration for lawless misconduct and a cover-up. My heart go’s out to these parents but whether this suit proceeds or not the concept of diplomatic immunity is not going away,
