RANDOM THOUGHTS:

Jackson’s on going water saga took another turn last week, the city water department announced that delinquent customers would soon have ther service shut off. Now this is not unexpected for people who have out standing bills and have made no attempt to contact the Water department to make arrangement for payment. But this seems unfair for people who have bills totaling a couple thousand dollers they simply can’t pay right away. Councilman Kenneth I. Stokes says this may be a scare tactic but the city can’t legally cut citizens off without sending them a written notice, and he said that citizens are being told to go to the Public Works Department at the Metro Center but thats not the proper procedure, they should contact the legal department and request a hearing. If they don’t get their issue resolved there, then can then go to the City Council to seek help. Mayor Lumumba said that no one has has been cut off for not paying their bill and the city would follow the rules regarding this matter. Now this train left the station a long time ago and the Conductor was Siemens, they hired sub contractors who improperly installed a lot of the new water meters, and in a number of cases improperly calibrated them. they offered pie in the sky returns for the city that never materialized. As this train ran off the tracks. People stopped recieving bills or the bills were incorrect, and of course a great number of the people recieving these crazy bills can least afford to pay them. Apparently someone was a sleep at the wheel, the smart thing to do when problems were discovered would have been to let people continue to pay the amount they paid for the last month they were billed under the old system until a solution was found. That way the city would still have been collecting some money and the citizens would not owe so much money. Personally I never got one of those crazy bills but if I got a bill that suggested that I had filled up a couple of olympic size swimming pools I would find it difficult to pay.
