Her name is Lora Gorgieva and she is the owner of a consulting company call Destination College. For at least two years she has been advising families on how they can legally transfer guardianship of their college bound children to a friend or family member, the reason the teens would then be considered independent for purposes of financial aid. Not having to declare their parents income they would be eligible for state, federal and college schlorships reserved for students from poor families. Ms Gorgieva said she came up with the strategy after seeing how much debt parent were taking on to send their children to college. The U.S. Education Department condemned her action and is moving to put a stop to it. The department spokeswoman said in a statement Tuesday ” The department is committed to assessing what changes can be made, either independently or in concert with Congress, to protect taxpayers from those who seek to game the system for their own finanical gain”. Earlier this year we heard that some celebrities and other people with deep pockets were buying their kids way into Ivy- league schools buy passing the usual application process, some are notable actresses and are now facing charges along with personnel at various colleges. Speaking as a parent with over $30.000 in student loan debt, this is a loophole that needs to be closed!!.
